In Estonia, this habitat type includes the low-nutrient (oligotrophic) lakes with clear light or bluish green water and semi-humic (semi-dystrophic) lakes with yellow or light brown water. The water of both is low in minerals and biogenic substances, but the semi-dystrophic bodies of water contain more humic substances and have richer biota.
The bottom and shores of low-nutrient lakes are mostly sandy, there are few to no shore plants and plants with floating leaves (Lake Mähuste in Harju County, Lake Nohipalu Valgjärv in Põlva County, Lake Viitna Pikkjärv in Lääne-Viru County). The bottom and shores of the semi-dystrophic lakes (for example, Lakes Uljaste and Kurtna Valgejärv in Ida-Viru County) are sometimes peaty and the large vegetation and phytoplankton are richer in species.
Includes the habitat type 6111 (oligotrophic waterbody site type) according to Paal.
